Registering a Death

All Death Registrations are by appointment only and due to the Coronavirus, all appointments will be completed over the telephone eliminating the need to for a relative to attend the Register Office in person. You need to book with the registrar in the area council office that your loved one passed away in.

Appointments can be made by phoning your local registrar, Advice will be given to you regarding the information you will need to have to register the death when you book your appointment.

Once the death registration has been completed, the Registrar will assist you with the following:

  1. Provide the necessary cremation or burial paperwork to your funeral director.  This paperwork will be sent directly from the Registrar to your funeral director by email, there is no need for you to collect this document.
  2. Provide a “Tell Us Once" unique reference number which you can then use to access the online Tell Us Once (https://www.redcar-cleveland.gov.uk/resident/births-deaths-marriages/registration/Pages/tell-us-once.aspx) servicewhich enables you to inform many government departments with the deceased's details, all at the same time.
  3. Provide you with certified copies of the death certificate. There is a statutory fee of £11.00 for each certificate.
